Re: 2009 Senate Bill 145 (Require drivers to stay in right lane)

To always stay in the right lane except to pass is not always the wisest, or safest, course.  When there are numerous trucks and other slower-moving vehicles in the right lane, it is more prudent to remain in the left lane at cruising speed, rather than to weave from one lane to another repeatedly.  Truckers don't need surprises.  One should have the option of using the left lane, then moving to the right only when a following vehicle is going faster and wishes to pass.  Slower traffic should keep to the right lanes unless it becomes necessary to pass.  This is common sense driving, and to legislate beyond the signs that read "Keep right except to pass" is unnecessary governmental micro-management and just another means to keep highway patrols busy writing tickets and increasing state revenue, when they could be controlling the real lawbreakers on our roads. Kansas isn't the Land of Ahs; it's the land of fees and taxes.

I agree with PNP-KS.  This is not an advisable bill.  It will encourage drivers to irratically switch lanes.  Often, if you move to the left to pass, the car or truck in the right lane speeds up, or you are traveling side by side with them.  Your only choice under this bill then is to speed up (possibly exceeding the speed limit) or slow down, which can cause problems with surounding traffic on a highway.  When there are two lanes that Kansas drivers are paying for, let us use whichever lane is appropriate to the conditions and legal to travel in, using our own good judgment not legislated judgment.

This new law is really retarded, it does not address the reasoning for such a law, nor does it increase safety.  It does create more lateral motion on the highways and increases the risk of accidents.

At a bare minimum this law should be amended to allow traffic in the left lane when passing ONLY if it is not a divided highway.  A four plus lane highway with the potential for head on collisions might be the only reason.

If you apply logic to this new law we will soon be changing all two lane highways to one way so as to not create the hazard of head-ons.

Now is the time to fix a dumb law, the only plus to a law like this is to increase the revenue from traffic fines and take money away from citizens that already are in a bind due to the current economy.
