Introduced by Sen. Jay Emler (R) on February 5, 2009, in his role as a committee chair, to create the Kansas Tourism Corporation and charge it with the promotion and development of travel and tourism in the state. The corporation would be governed by a 13 member Board, with appointments to the Board made by the Governor, legislative leaders and the Travel Industry Association of Kansas. The corporation would be allowed to exclusively utilize the money in the Travel and Tourism Development Fund, which is created by the bill. 50 percent of the state sales tax collected from tourism companies across Kansas would be deposited into the Travel and Tourism Fund for use by the corporation. The Kansas Tourism Corporation would assume the responsibilities currently performed by the Travel and Tourism Division in the Kansas Department of Commerce. All current state employees handling travel and tourism responsibilities would be transferred to the Kansas Tourism Corporation.
